If you read the August edition of your Belize Insider you'll know that my husband and I had to delay our return trip from Colorado to Ambergris Caye by a few days due to Hurricane Earl. Last weekend, I had a chance to check out the beach, where most of the damage occurred. I'm happy to report that, although this Category 1 hurricane did a lot of damage to docks and structures over sea, things are already getting back to normal.
Hurricane Earl landed on Belize's shores on August 3. It's been over 15 years since a hurricane made an impact in northern Belize. We really don't get that many direct hits here. Most hurricanes in Belize occur between mid-September and the end of the season, so Earl was even more unusual.
This month we'll address several practical topics that are important if you are planning to move to Belize. I'll also review a new trend in Belize—gourmet farmers' markets.
It's hard to resist the allure of Belize's gorgeous offshore cayes (small islands). There are at least 200 sitting off shore. But only a few are inhabited, with fully functioning towns. Recently I spent a few days exploring Caye Caulker, one of the two recognized cayes where expats live off the coast of Belize.
