The sign reads “welcome to the remotest island,” and it’s no idle boast. A nearby milepost points to London 5,337 miles away. And in the other direction to Oslo, Norway, 5,195 miles away. The jumping off point to get here is Cape Town, South Africa -- 1,743 miles away.

Part-time residence abroad? Not for me, thank you. At least that was my position 10 years ago, when I was preparing for my own move overseas.
