Our correspondent in Costa Rica moved there recently with his young family. They chose a spot where the weather suits them, the health care is good and the cost of living is lower than in the States. A Garifuna dancer strikes a pose at the annual junkanoo dance contest, a Caribbean tradition. Shaking themselves, arms half raised, the dancers move toward the drummers. Their feet and bodies respond to each beat of the pulsing drums. Chanting women and the cheers of the crowd drown out the lapping of the ocean waves, only a few yards away. I wiggle to the front through throngs of smiling Belizeans to get a better view.
An affordable lifestyle was definitely one of the reasons why my wife, Suzan Haskins, and I became expats more than a decade ago. The opportunity to halve our cost of living and still get better weather, healthier food, lower-cost medical care, and a truly relaxed, “off the treadmill” pace of life was one we couldn’t pass up.
