From Seashores to Seasons—Whatever You Crave, It’s Out There

Never want to shovel snow again? I don’t blame you. Personally, I think snow looks lovely on top of a mountain, in the distance, far away from where I am. Apart from a couple of ski trips in my youth, I’ve never actively sought out the stuff. These days, I’m happier in the warmth of a southern European beach resort or on a palm fringed island in southeast Asia.

But, you know, there’s a lovely temperate zone between the extremes which suits a lot of people. Indeed, when I meet IL readers, or read your letters, lots mention that you’d love to move abroad, but feel that you’d miss the changing of the seasons—that gentle rhythm of color and contrast that marks the passing of the years.

To which I say, “No problem! Seasons occur overseas too.” And what a tempting range of places there are to enjoy those seasons, with their own traditions and rituals to celebrate them. Have you ever thought of springtime in Italy, summer in Ireland, fall in Uruguay, or winter in Vietnam? Read on to discover the wealth of seasonal living you could be enjoying overseas.

Then again, maybe you’re one of the people who does love the heat. Year-round heat, with palm trees, white sand, laidback living, and truly affordable living. Again, I say, “No problem!” Ao Nang, on the Andaman coast of Thailand is my new favorite beach resort for expats. It’s jaw-droppingly scenic, warm as toast, and it’s right at that stage of development where it has everything you need, but hasn’t become overpriced or overrun. It’s a true gem.
